Icecave under the Arolla Glacier

A visit to the Arolla Glacier with it's icecave. I heard about it a few years ago. It is really special. At the moment the local people believe that because glaciers are melting now ithe icecave will disappear. From Arolla parking it is a 1,5-2 hours walk uphill. The entrance is enourmous.

The cave is about 20-25 meters wide and a few hundred meters long. If you go inside (you need a helmet) the colors are beautiful.

As we went uphill it was minus 5 degrees and as we came down it was 11 celsius. You have to be careful going downhill. The snow melts and if you are not careful you sink into the snow (if you have no snowshoes). The snowlayer was 60 cm thick and we went in until our knees.
